WHAT IS GLYCOLIC ACID?

Glycolic acid is a super-versatile alpha hydroxy acid (also known as AHA). AHAs are classified as organic acids and include lactic acid, mandelic acid and citric acid. Glycolic acid is one of the smallest AHA molecules and is known to penetrate the upper layer of skin easily, making it an efficient skincare ingredient.

GLYCOLIC ACID BENEFITS FOR SKIN

While there are plenty of good-for-skin acids out there, this particular alpha hydroxy acid is a bit of a superstar. Instead of working by physical abrasion, glycolic acid works as a chemical exfoliator, accelerating the natural cell turnover of your skin's surface. It does this by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, helping reveal brighter, smoother, more even-looking skin. It can also help refine pores, improve the appearance of post-acne marks and help visibly smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Oh, and glycolic acid is used to reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin texture and tone, too.

By this point, you may be excited about adding glycolic acid formulas to your routine, and we’re excited for you to see the results! Just remember to apply SPF as directed, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure to protect your skin throughout the day since AHAs can increase sensitivity to the sun and the possibility of sunburn. AHAs should not be used by those with certain skin conditions or with certain exfoliating products, and if irritation occurs, discontinue use. We recommend patch testing especially if you’re new to using AHAs, and as always, check with your doctor before adding any new skincare product to your routine.
