WHAT IS SQUALANE?

WHAT IS SQUALANE?

Squalane is the synthetic form of squalene (with an “e”), a naturally occurring lipid made by our skin cells and found in sebum. Because squalane is lighter and less prone to oxidation, it feels better on the skin and lasts longer — making it a great option for hydrating oily skin types.

SQUALANE BENEFITS FOR SKIN

You’ve probably seen squalane listed in some of your favorite products, but what does it do exactly? Although the body produces squalene naturally, its production is significantly lower after the age of 30, making squalane a great addition to your anti-aging skincare routine to address signs of aging like dryness and loss of elasticity.

In skincare, squalane’s properties work well in products like face serums, anti-aging moisturizers and oils. Its emollience helps lock in hydration and promote smoother, softer skin. And there’s more! Its antioxidant, non-comedogenic (or non-pore clogging) and antibacterial properties make it safe for sensitive skin types. It’s no wonder squalane is likely already (or will be) in one of the products on your beauty shelf.

Dr. Julia Tzu, M.D., F.A.A.D.

“Hydrated skin is healthy skin. That’s why I always remind my patients (even the minimalists) to make skincare a priority, especially as they age. A quality moisturizer, with emollients like squalane helps add back that extra hydration the skin needs to look its best at any age.”
